Gender reveal photo ideas

The gender reveal photo everyone wants is the half-second of reaction, so plan the reveal around the camera: where the parents stand, where the color goes and who holds the phone. Here are 18 ideas for the reveal, the details and the moments after.

The reveal

  1. Confetti cannons The parents twist their cannons at the same moment, pointed up and away from guests. Shoot from the side at waist height to get both faces and the color.
  2. Balloon box Pink or blue balloons float out of a big box. Crouch behind the box, aimed back toward the parents, so the balloons rise past their faces.
  3. The first slice Get a close-up as the knife lifts the first piece of cake to show the color inside, then step back for the reaction.
  4. Big black balloon Fill a large black balloon with colored confetti and pop it above the parents with a pin. Start the burst on the count of one.
  5. Big sibling does it Let the older child pop the balloon or open the box, and keep the camera on their face rather than the color.
  6. Hit the ball One parent hits a baseball or golf ball made to burst with colored powder. Stand well to the side and shoot a burst at the swing.
  7. Piñata Parents take turns at a piñata filled with pink or blue candy. Shoot wide so the falling candy fills the frame.

Setup and details

  1. The guess board Guests put a pink or blue dot under their guess. Shoot the board before the reveal, then again with the winners circled.
  2. Two teams Guests wear pink or blue. Line each team up on one side of the parents for a group shot before the countdown.
  3. Ultrasound in hand A close-up of both parents’ hands holding the ultrasound, with the sealed envelope tucked behind it.
  4. Countdown cards Three guests hold up 3, 2 and 1 cards in turn. Shoot each one, then the reveal, for a four-photo carousel.
  5. Cupcake bite Guests bite into cupcakes with a hidden pink or blue center at the same moment. Shoot the row of faces, not the cupcakes.

Reactions and after

  1. Faces only Give one person a single job: shoot the parents’ faces, never the confetti. Stand in front of them, a few steps back.
  2. The crowd from behind Stand behind the parents and shoot the guests’ faces as they see the color.
  3. Grandparents If grandparents watch on a video call, put a second phone on them so their reaction gets its own photo.
  4. Lying in the confetti Afterwards, the couple lies down in the confetti on the grass. Shoot straight down from a chair.
  5. The quiet hug A minute after the noise, the parents hold each other. This is often the photo that gets framed.
  6. Bump with the color The parent-to-be holds a pink or blue balloon against the bump, shot side-on.

Make it move

Skip fireworks and smoke flares: they can start fires and hurt people, and confetti or balloons give you the same color. Then let Tada add the motion:

Questions

What are easy gender reveal ideas?

A balloon box, confetti cannons or a cake with a colored inside are the simplest. They need no special gear and they’re easy to photograph from a few steps away.

Who should take photos at a gender reveal?

Ask two people. One shoots the whole scene wide and one shoots only the parents’ faces, because the reaction is the photo most people want to keep.

How do I photograph a gender reveal with an iPhone?

Lock focus on the parents before the countdown, then shoot a burst until the color settles. Stand to the side, not behind the color, so you can see faces.
