Canva photo animation, and another way
In Canva, select your photo and choose Animate to make it pan, zoom, tumble or wipe in: the photo moves around your design. To make what’s inside the picture move, like people blinking and smiling, use Tada on iPhone and save it to Photos as a Live Photo.

How to animate a photo in Canva
- Open a design in Canva, on the web or in the app, and add your photo from Uploads.
- Select the photo, then select Animate in the toolbar.
- Pick a style, such as Pan, Tumble or Zoom, or a mask effect like Ink or Paint Brush. Choose a speed: Slow, Medium or Fast.
- For your own path, choose Create an Animation and drag the photo the way you want it to move, then select Done.
- Download it as a video or GIF, or share it straight to social media.
Canva says each animation can be up to 10 seconds, the styles on offer depend on whether you’ve selected a photo, text or a shape, and some styles are tagged for Canva Pro.
Canva’s Image to Video
Canva also has an AI tool for motion inside the picture. Select the image, choose Edit, then Image to Video under Tools, and pick Smart or describe the motion in Custom. It makes a 5-second clip with subtle movement and uses your Canva AI allowance.
Canva’s help page is open about its limits: it doesn’t fully support face animation, so faces may not move as expected.
Make the picture itself move with Tada
- Open Tada and tap Make it Live, then pick a photo from your camera roll.
- Choose how it moves. Breathe and Puff are free and made on your phone in about a second. Natural and Lively use AI: people blink, smile, laugh and turn their heads; pets look around; water and leaves move.
- Tap Save. It goes to Photos as a Live Photo, ready to send in Messages.
You can also add stickers that land on the person and keep moving, from Add effects, or doodle with Draw. Tada is for the photo itself, not a layout: it has no text tools, templates or music. To post a tada where only videos play, see how to make a photo into a video.
When to use which
| Canva Animate | Tada | |
|---|---|---|
| Made for | Designs: posts, slides, ads with text and layout | One photo from your camera roll |
| What moves | The photo as a whole: pan, zoom, wipe, or along a path | What’s inside the picture: faces, hair, pets, water |
| What you get | A video or GIF download | A Live Photo in your Photos app |
| Where | Web and mobile app | iPhone |
If you’re making a post, a slide or an ad, Canva is the right place: the photo is one part of a bigger design. If you want a single photo to come alive and stay in your Photos app, use Tada. For more options, see apps that make pictures move.
